How Do Surge Attacks Work in Battle Cats?
A Surge is an extra, lingering attack generated at a random position after a successful attack. Read three values separately: the chance to generate it, its possible spawn positions, and its level. An enemy's ordinary range alone does not tell you where its Surge can appear, and Wave immunity is not Surge immunity.

Read Kappy Jr.'s Surge record
Open Kappy Jr.'s enemy record. Its ordinary range and Surge parameters describe different parts of the attack:
| Field | Current value | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary range | 230 | Range recorded for the enemy's main attack. |
| Surge chance | 100% | Generation chance when the attack satisfies the Surge trigger; not a guarantee that it hits your backline. |
| Spawn positions | 150–750 | Bounds for the Surge's spawn position, not the complete area its hitbox covers. |
| Surge level | Lv1 | Controls how long the Surge persists, not its spawn-position bounds. |
The upper spawn bound is 750 while ordinary range is 230: 750 − 230 = 520 range units farther away. This comparison explains why staying beyond the ordinary range is not enough to infer safety from Surge. It does not define a safe distance: the Surge has its own hitbox, and positioning changes during a fight.
What does the Surge level mean?
Our catalog converts Surge level to persistence using 20 frames per level at 30 frames per second. For this record, Lv1 gives 1 × 20 = 20 frames, or 20 ÷ 30 ≈ 0.67 seconds. This is the level-based persistence value, not the enemy's attack frequency or a measurement of the entire visual animation.
A higher level does not by itself move the spawn bounds farther away. Check the position values separately. The generic enemy-stats guide explains ordinary attack timing and nominal DPS; it does not simulate which Surge hits connect with a particular Cat lineup.
Surge and Wave use different defenses
A Wave travels outward; a Surge stays around its generated position. PONOS lists Wave immunity and Surge immunity as separate abilities. Wave Shield is described as negating Waves and protecting units behind the shield unit; it is not a Surge defense. When checking your Cats, look for the Surge-specific ability rather than assuming an anti-Wave Cat covers both.
Ordinary Surge, Mini-Surge, Death Surge and Counter-Surge are separate labels in the catalog. This worked example covers ordinary Surge. Read the exact label on the enemy before applying its chance or trigger to a different variant.
Check your encounter in three steps
- Find the enemy by name in the enemy catalog, open its record, and read its main range plus Surge parameters.
- Open its stage appearances and apply the recorded HP/ATK percentages in its calculator.
- Check your Cat's own Surge defense, range and attack pattern. This enemy-only database does not validate a particular Cat build or winning lineup.
Searching for the base rather than the mechanic? The Surge Base record is a specific enemy-base entry, not the definition of every Surge attack.

PONOS's official Cat Guide describes Surge generation and the separate Wave/Surge defenses. The community Surge reference explains lingering attacks and level-based persistence. Spawn bounds are not safe-zone boundaries, and this guide does not estimate real damage received in a stage.
