Why Do Metal Enemies Take So Little Damage in Battle Cats?

Metal enemies reduce ordinary, non-Critical damage to one point per hit. That makes the number of hits matter more than your Cat's listed attack power. A Critical hit bypasses this reduction; Metal Killer is another exception that removes a percentage of the enemy's current HP. Check the enemy's HP and your stage magnification before estimating how long a fight will take.

Examples below use 100% base HP from Japan game data v15.6 · English release available.

What does one damage per ordinary hit mean?

If every hit connects, no Critical or Metal Killer effect occurs, and each hit deals just one damage, the minimum number of those ordinary hits equals the enemy's HP. The current catalog gives these concrete examples:

Metal enemyBase HP at 100%One-damage hits needed
Metal Doge3030
Super Metal Hippoe8,0008,000
Metal Cyclone77,77777,777

For example, Super Metal Hippoe has 8,000 base HP. A Cat with a large listed attack still removes only one HP with an ordinary hit against Metal, so ordinary hits alone would require 8,000 connections. This is a hit-count illustration, not a time-to-kill prediction: attack frequency, missed attacks, knockbacks and other effects change the real fight.

What changes with Critical and Metal Killer?

A Critical hit can damage a Metal enemy without the usual one-damage limit. Metal Killer instead deals damage based on a percentage of the target's current HP. They solve the same practical problem in different ways: one makes a successful hit much more valuable; the other scales with remaining HP. A Cat's actual chance, attack pattern, and ability values must be checked on that Cat; this site catalogs enemies, not Cat builds.

Do not multiply an enemy's HP by your Cat's displayed DPS to predict a Metal matchup. DPS describes nominal attack output, while the Metal rule changes the damage of ordinary hits that actually land.

Check the stage before choosing a lineup

  1. Open the Metal enemy filter or an enemy record and confirm its base HP.
  2. Check that record's stage appearances for the HP percentage in your encounter.
  3. Use its magnification calculator to estimate stage HP, then compare your Cat's Critical or Metal Killer ability and attack frequency.

At a hypothetical 200% HP magnification, Super Metal Hippoe would have 16,000 HP. Ordinary one-damage hits alone would then need that many connections. See the stage appearances for real recorded percentages and the enemy-stats guide for the HP calculation.

Sources and limits

Enemy HP and Metal traits come from our versioned catalog; see data methodology. PONOS's official Cat Guide describes Metal damage reduction, Critical, and Metal Killer. The community Metal reference documents the one-damage ordinary-hit rule. The hit-count examples assume every hit connects and no other damage or defense mechanic intervenes; they are not a guaranteed strategy for a stage.
