Barrier vs Aku Shield: Why Your Hits Work Differently
A Starred Alien Barrier tests the damage of an individual hit: weaker hits do not accumulate toward breaking it. An Aku Shield has its own HP, which qualifying hits can wear down across attacks. A Shield can recover when its enemy is knocked back. Barrier Breaker and Shield Piercing are different Cat abilities, so check which defense the enemy actually has before choosing your answer.
Enemy values below come from Japan game data v15.6 · English release available at base magnification.
Compare two real enemy records
| Enemy | Base enemy HP | Separate defense | How ordinary hits break it |
|---|---|---|---|
| UltraBaaBaa | 500 | Barrier limit: 266,000 | One hit must meet the limit; repeated weaker hits do not add up. |
| Aku Cyclone | 1,666,666 | Aku Shield: 1,666,666 HP; 100% recovery | Damage can accumulate, but the Shield recovers on a damage-based knockback. |
The defense number is not the same as enemy HP. For example, UltraBaaBaa has 500 base HP behind a 266,000-damage Barrier limit. Reading only its HP would miss the main obstacle. These are base values, not a specific stage encounter.
What would repeated 150,000-damage hits do?
Take a hypothetical Cat that lands separate 150,000-damage hits against each defense. Each hit is below UltraBaaBaa's 266,000 Barrier limit, so two, ten, or more such hits do not break it by addition. A sufficiently strong single hit, or a successful Barrier Breaker effect, changes that outcome.
Against Aku Cyclone's 1,666,666-HP Aku Shield, the same hits can add up: 12 × 150,000 = 1,800,000, enough to deplete the base Shield if all those hits connect before it recovers. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a promise of 12 attacks in a real stage: damage modifiers, knockbacks, missed hits and stage magnification can change it.
What changes at stage magnification?
The community mechanic references distinguish another important rule: a Barrier limit stays fixed when enemy strength changes, while Aku Shield HP scales with enemy magnification. At a hypothetical 200% strength, UltraBaaBaa's Barrier would still require a hit meeting 266,000 damage, while Aku Cyclone's base Shield would have 1,666,666 × 2 = 3,333,332 HP. This comparison is not a recorded stage; use each enemy's stage section to find the actual magnification.
Match the Cat ability to the defense
PONOS describes Barrier Breaker as nullifying enemy Barriers on activation, and Shield Piercing as destroying Aku Shields on activation. Check your Cat's actual ability and activation chance; this enemy-only database does not list Cat levels or build a team for you. A unit having one ability does not establish that it has the other.
- Open the enemy record and distinguish its HP from its Barrier or Aku Shield value.
- Check the stage appearances and magnification; do not treat the base example as the stage value.
- Compare your Cat's per-hit damage and Barrier Breaker or Shield Piercing ability with the relevant defense.

Sources and limits
PONOS's official Cat Guide describes Barrier Breaker and Shield Piercing as separate abilities. The community references for Barriers and Aku Shields explain the single-hit versus cumulative-damage rules, Shield recovery and how the two defenses respond differently to magnification. Numeric examples are pulled from our release-stamped catalog; see the data methodology. This page does not predict a stage's actual hit sequence or recommend a specific Cat lineup.
